What have you been wearing on stage? Anything new you've been liking?
neggy gemmy (@neggygemmy)
Where do I even begin. What I wear on stage is really important, if it’s not right nothing is right. I’ve got to put the clothes on and feel almost like it’s a costume. I’m definitely becoming a concentrated character of myself. Lately I’ve been wearing micro mini skirts from Miaou over some KNWLS flared pants or KNWLS flared leggings, a studded belt, and some kind of little top. I feel as though it’s okay and I encourage it, to go overboard with it when getting dressed for the stage. People have to stare at you for like at least thirty minutes so you’ve got to give them plenty to absorb. And it’s just more fun that way. One of my recent shows I wore a Lifershop dress, that was super fun. Anything that gets me more into the feeling of being a c^nty techno fairy bratty cartoon character of sorts is what I’m ultimately going for. Huge shoes from Eytys are also a staple of the stage wardrobe for me for that reason. I like doing really long hair extensions, they just accentuate every move.

Do you collaborate with anyone? A stylist? A friend?
neggy gemmy
I actually do not. I spend too much time on the internet just looking at fashion and thinking about clothes. I have a bachelor's degree in fashion design, so it’s just in my nature to, and I enjoy creating my own style. But my friend Sterling always colors my hair, she’s down to do anything crazy, she’s the best.

Do you make any special pieces?

I actually sewed the sculptural backdrop for my last tour, it was a bunch of these plushy star pillows, some of them had faces, and they were the 3D element of a moving video projection of my album cover, which was drawn by one of my favorite artists of recent, uou___cute. It was really fun to make and even cooler to see it in action. One time I sewed my own purple see-thru tube top and baggy pants b/c I couldn’t afford the real thing that I wanted. That was cool I forgot about that one! I need to do more stuff like that.

Where do you find stage clothes? Any fav shops?
neggy gemmy
Definitely the internet mostly. And I might be the only one to admit that Amazon has saved me on several occasions coming through with the fluorescent fishnets or flashy accessories. Them and the Goodwill in my neighborhood. Some of my favorite designers I follow with close attention are KNWLS, Diesel, Poster Girl, Miaou, MISBHV. Anything that leans in a technoey feminine direction I am looking at that.

Where does your sense of style come from? Any special sources of inspiration?
neggy gemmy
Yes. the science fiction movie The Fifth Element starring Bruce Willis and Mila Jovovich from 1997. The costume designing was done by Jean Paul Gaultier. I saw this movie when I was a kid and then I guess I just decided I was gona base my whole life around it. I had never, nor have I since, seen anything quite like it in terms of world-building and creating a totally unique aesthetic for a film. It’s very flamboyant, very futuristic, very fun. Gwen Stefani and Kylie Minogue are some fashion icon favorites of mine. I love Gwen’s Tragic Kingdom tour era, she could have this BDE about her and simultaneously exude huge queen energy. That’s my favorite.
