The Roland TB-303 - 8 Track Acid Primer
by Jai
Even if you haven’t heard of the Roland TB-303 by name, you’ve probably heard the squelchy, rubbery, synthetic bass lines it spits out. The once infamous piece of hardware became a rave staple through the 90s acid house movement before reaching its peak in 2001–when Timbaland used it to make Aaliyah’s hit “Try Again.” Before reaching icon status, the TB-303 was a massive commercial flop. So much so that one of the 10,000 original units has found its way into the Museum of Failure while others were rumored to be dumped in the Tokyo Bay by Roland themselves. Savage. Known amongst gear-heads for its awful layout and wild inconsistency between units, it’s astonishing that this synthesizer had a resurgence over a decade after its 1981 release.
Get to know the TB-303 with this 8 track primer below:
Fatboy Slim - Everybody Needs A 303
G Jones & Eprom - On My Mind
Tame Impala - Breathe Deeper
Hardfloor - Arcperience 1
Orange Juice - Rip It Up
Phuture - Acid Tracks
Daft Punk - Da Funk
Aaliyah - Try Again
you’ve probably heard the squelchy, rubbery, synthetic bass lines it spits out.

Before globetrotting with the likes of Paramore and Tame Impala, Genesis Owusu broke out of Australia’s alternative scene with a distinct fusion of funk, pop, and rock. His latest album STRUGGLER brings some goth rock and post-punk into the fold.
This week, he gives us the soundtrack to his life on his curated playlist –
