Stoner Doom
by Corey
Without context, Stoner Doom may elicit images of that one really bad anti-weed PSA of the girl deflated onto a couch. But amidst the convoluted and dedicated world of metal music, Stoner Doom is home to lovers of rumbling low-end bass and rhythm, thick, fuzzy guitar, slowed-down tempos, and a lyrical focus on dread. Although derived from parent genres heavy metal and psychedelic rock, most Stoner Rock connoisseurs would say all roads start and end with Black Sabbath. Most notably their seminal album Master of Reality, and more on-brand, the single Sweet Leaf left a foundation for future Stoner Doomers to pay homage in sweaty, smoke-filled rooms. Cut from the same cloth created by Sabbath, bands such as Elder and Khemmis represent the genre’s evolutionary process with their progressive, blues-based take on doom. Here are Stoner Doom’s strongest and sludgiest tracks where the riff reigns supreme.
Elder - Sanctuary
Sleep - Giza Butler
Saint Vitus - Born Too Late
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs - Big Rig
Electric Wizard - Dopethrone
