Escape Room
In the midst of a chaotic Spotify Wrapped season, we look to demystify a genre that has graced the Top-5 list of innumerable Elsewhere regulars — “Escape Room”. For those expecting some extensive lore, sadly our algorithmic Spotify overlords simply seem to be “going off vibes”. Escape Room is the brainchild of the platform’s self-proclaimed “Data Alchemist,” Glenn McDonald. He revealed in an interview that “escape” refers to the genre’s affinity for “trap” sonics. McDonald also invokes PC music, noting that the label-turned-genre sounds like “solving and creating puzzles” to him. It’s clear that Escape Room also expands into indie, electro-pop, and R&B as well. But I’m sure we all picked up on that from the name… right?
