Monstercat: Bringing the Rave to YouTube
EDM is inherently tied to the live experience, so it takes real ingenuity to take it from the club to the laptops of young fans around the world. The bright minds that made it happen with Monstercat back in 2011 weren’t seasoned music industry professionals. They were just Canadian college students at the University of Waterloo named Mike Darlington and Ari Paunonen. Little did they know that the YouTube channel that they started to promote the music of their friends would become an international phenomenon that would kick start the careers of artists like upcoming Elsewhere performers MEMBA and helloworld. Monstercat built their innovative business model from the ground up, focusing on signing artists for individual songs instead of albums before collecting those singles into compilations. Those compilations would served as an key entrypoint to EDM for Gen Zers everywhere –
Stonebank - Who’s Got Your Love
MEMBA & Ehiorobo - Stand Off
helloworld - 2hard2letgo
Marshmello - Alone
Rootkit - Real Love
