Pirate Radio & Commodore Dreams
by Skylar
Coming to you live from off the coast of London, pirate radio broadcasts like Rush FM and Kool FM shook the underground music scene of the 90s and early 2000s with dreamlike and choppy break beats, ethereal melodies and airy vocal samples, all while running from the cops. Jungle is the electronic sound of the early 90s, taking reggae and Caribbean influence and infusing it with a digitalized and aggressive speed that captivated listeners and brought people together to dance, sweat, and express themselves through the counterculture that mainstream radio refused to broadcast. Producers would often whip up amen break style tracks using the Amiga Commodore and DAWs like OctaMED, a free music production software with a particular compression and sound that many artists consider essential to the artform.
Over time jungle’s melody forward hypnotic signature has evolved into the percussion focused DnB that’s become a signature sound of modern pop. Check out some of the best jungle of the 90s, and the modern tracks that take notes, below –
Wax Doctor - Heat
Peshay - On the Nile (2017 Remaster)
Origin Unknown - Valley of the Shadows
The Chameleon - Just Close Your Eyes & Listen
Frank De Wulf - Drums in a Grip (Wax Doctor Remix)
PinkPanthress - Notice I Cried
G Jones - Iridescent Leaves Floating Downstream
Vitesse X - Us Ephemeral (George Clanton Remix)
