Leaking Into Culture
by Jai
It seems that track leaks have become an epidemic within the underground and mainstream alike, but few instances hold a candle to Jai Paul’s Leak 04-13 (Bait Ones). Pop heads have been singing the project’s praises for over a decade now, but for the uninitiated, the collection of tracks is considered the spawn point for 2010 electro-pop stars such as Flume, Jadu Heart and more. In many ways, it’s clear that the project is a leak – a crystal clear sonic vision distorted through muddy and rough cut mixes that are packed with the energy of a spontaneous studio session. Jai Paul said that he believes the tracks were stolen from a misplaced CD in 2013, but early versions of tracks such as “BTSU” and “Jasmine” had been floating around on MySpace since 2007. On one hand, it’s hard to imagine the massive reach these tracks could have had if they were released as a completed album. On the other, a more polished release could have changed the one-of-one aesthetic inextricably tied to it’s incompleteness. Its influence truly cannot be understated.
Lorde - Homemade Dynamite
Anderson .Paak - Miss Right
Jadu Heart - Galaxy Surfing
Flume - Tropical Sun
Aminé - OKWME
