Sounds of the Sand

Hans Zimmer has once again outdone himself. If you've had the chance to catch "Dune 2" already, you know that both ears and eyes were equally considered in the portrayal of Arrakis, or what Zimmer refers to as "the most unloved planet." Zimmer is, without a doubt, the 21st century's greatest evoker of mythical soundscapes. Film scores and sound design are most convincing when their relationships are symbiotic, especially when depicting the catalyst of a new-age Holy War. Both Zimmer and director Denis Villeneuve credit Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel as a teenage obsession of theirs. Believe me when I say you can hear the obsession in what's now aliased as "Peak Cinema" across the globe. Zimmer is known for his serial collaborations with directors on works ranging from the "Dark Knight Trilogy" to all four "Kung Fu Pandas" . That’s real range. Zimmer and sound designer Richard King worked in tandem to make a foreign world sound incredibly familiar. Zimmer explained that he felt such a deep connection to the film that he continued writing music in anticipation of the sequel despite Villeneuve proclaiming, "We are not greenlit for the second movie!" Against Villeneuve’s wishes, Hans toured all over Europe and secretly opened his shows with his composition titled "A Time of Quiet Between the Storms." If you're an audiophile, head on over to the theater and give your ears a treat.
