Side Pieces

Sometimes, it really helps to fully detox and just take a vacation - explore somewhere new, be somebody different for a little while, and soak in some sun and newfound inspiration. Or at least, I’d imagine that’s the kind of attitude that many artists with a side project have! Whether as a creative outlet for new ideas that don’t fit their usual musical style, or as a way to secretly release under a new unknown name, there’s a ton of incredible music that you might not have known about.
Kieran Hebden of indie electronic project Four Tet is a perfect example of side projects at their best, with a whole slew of wild aliases that allow Kieran to explore different moods, genres, and atmospheric textures. KH is a well known project of Four Tet’s that takes a dance forward approach to his otherwise floaty beats, whereas Kieran’s unintelligible alias ⣎⡇ꉺლ༽இ•̛)ྀ◞ ༎ຶ ༽ৣৢ؞ৢ؞ؖ ꉺლ (which fans lovingly call “Windings” after the symbol based typeface) doubles down on atmospheric ambient bliss.
Porter Robinson explores the dark digital abyss of the forgotten parts of the internet with his side project Virtual Self, a mysterious 2000’s trance and techno alias that features music canonically made by two characters, Pathselector and Technic Angel. The project’s live show segments out into two distinct arcs of each character’s style, making for a dark b2b feel on an otherwise totally solo project.
Similarly, Caribou works out his grittier hip-shaking itch with side project Daphni, a dance-forward project with a focus on spontaneity and club inspired repetition; a similar attitude to Stardust, the alias led by Thomas Bangalter of Daft Punk. Formed as a trio with Alan Braxe and Benjamin Diamond, Stardust is a one hit wonder that immediately disbanded after releasing the critically acclaimed “Music Sounds Better with You” to create mystique.
