Plunderphonics – a sound collage
by Jai
If you’re like me and modernity has sufficiently fried your attention span… enter the wonderfully overstimulating world of Plunderphonics. It came to life alongside the rise of turntablism, digital samplers, and the critique of music copyright laws in the 70’s and early 80’s. Composer John Oswald coined the term to ask a question: “Can the sounding materials that inspire composition be sometimes considered compositions themselves?”
While typically drawing inspiration from iconic pop and hip-hop tunes, the adoption of unconventional and even volatile song structures enables a borderless approach to genre. A characteristically loose mix allows the many layers of these tracks to swell into a sonic mass that is somewhat unintelligible, yet familiar enough to invoke the nostalgia of its samples. Dive deep into the noise and see how many samples you can pick out.
DJ Shadow - Midnight In A Perfect World
death’s dynamic shroud - CD Player, Pt. III
DJ Sabrina The Teenage DJ - Charmed
The Avalanches - Since I Left You
Nujabes - Beat laments the world
Stennes - Billowing Sails
Cornelius - Mic Check
J Dilla - Stop
