Kawaii metal
by Payton

It’s safe to say that kawaii metal is having a moment this year. In June, Lil Uzi Vert’s PINK TAPE brought a number of rock and metal groups into the mix, leaving many critics scratching their heads. Tucked away at the end was a collaboration with BABYMETAL – the Japanese group widely considered to have started the kawaii metal movement and the biggest band in the scene today. The unique mixture of J-pop and heavy metal that BABYMETAL popularized has become a quiet favorite within the alternative music community in the states – so much so that viral YouTuber Poppy released a whole album inspired by it in 2020 – but now that style is being exposed to an even wider audience of rap fans. In anticipation of Halloween, we collected some of the spookiest kawaii metal tracks with an edge of cuteness that’s so sweet it’ll rot your teeth.

BABYMETAL - Headbangeeeeerrrrr!!!!!
Poppy - I Disagree
NECRONOMIDOL - Witching Hour
XTEEN - Living Dead Doll
BiSH - GiANT KiLLERS
Fruitpochette - 暴虐-Parasite
Bring Me The Horizon - Kingslayer (feat. BABYMETAL)
