Cosmic Americana
by Sophia

“You can call it rock and roll – or you can call it country music. I just don’t like the label country-rock,” claimed Gram Parsons in his final interview. Before his death at the age of 26, Parsons released the solo album “GP” and was a member of The Byrds, The International Submarine Band and The Flying Burrito Brothers. However, arguably the defining album in the Cosmic American scope was his post-mortem record “Return of the Grievous Angel”. A synthesis of country, folk, rock, blues, gospel, and beyond: Cosmic Americana was the conciliator between the hippies and the outlaws. While it’s sonically imprinted in the 1960s/70s, the genre has never left the zeitgeist, fed by label compilations and refreshed by the current country renaissance. The lucidity of traditional country lyrics imbued with “cosmic” – cutting edge, transmuted instrumentation traces the scene. Put on your Nudie Suit and check out some of the best steelers, pickers and cowboys:

Gram Parsons - Return of the Grievous Angel
Link Wray - Black River Swamp
Billy Swan - Don’t Be Cruel
Townes Van Zandt - Hunger Child Blues
Robert Lester Folsom - See You Later, I’m Gone
Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen - Seeds And Stems (Again)
Dougie Poole - Vaping on the Job
Sturgill Simpson - Turtles All the Way Down
